I spend a lot of time here talking about the artisans and the handcrafted jewelry that we buy for our collections, but I haven’t talked much about the experience of traveling to Peru to choose the jewelry. I usually go four times a year, sometimes alone and sometimes with one of my partners. We meet with the artisans and share ideas about new designs, often coming up with new ones together. When I leave that initial meeting, I’ve usually placed an order and then I have to wait for it to be produced. What to do, what to do… Usually, I travel! There is so much more of Peru to see as it is an incredible country with landscape that is varied and a cultural history that is rich. From North to South, from the coast to the central valleys, there are adventures to be had. On a recent trip this summer, we went to the Colca Valley with my sister and partner Robin, as well as her family and some friends. Fourteen of us stood on the edge of the canyon, watching the condors fly out on thermal winds in the morning. Amazing! And there are always opportunities to interact with animals that are native to Peru, which makes my youngest daughter so happy as she is an animal lover. Here she is making friends with a baby llama on the side of the canyon. When we returned to Lima, we met with the artisans again to see the new designs, tweak and test them and finally, place an order. And that’s a simplified version of how we come to offer the wonderfully innovative Peruvian jewelry on our Tikanchay website.
